FAQs
What happens after I contact you?
I'll arrange an initial conversation to discuss your needs, answer any questions and explore whether counselling with me is the right fit. If we decide to move forward, I'll ask you to complete a referral form before arranging an assessment consultation.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed in counselling is confidential, with some important exceptions relating to safety and legal responsibilities. I'll explain confidentiality fully before counselling begins.
As part of my professional practice, I also have regular clinical supervision with a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist. Supervision is a confidential space where I can reflect on my work and ensure I am providing safe, ethical and effective support. I do not share identifying information unnecessarily, and supervision is carried out in accordance with professional and ethical requirements.
How long are sessions?
Counselling sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly.
How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is different. Following the assessment process, I usually recommend an initial commitment of six counselling sessions before reviewing progress together.
How will I be involved in my child’s counselling?
As a parent or carer, you play an important role in supporting your child's wellbeing, and we'll work together where appropriate throughout the counselling process.
For younger children, it can sometimes be helpful for a parent or carer to be present at the beginning of the first session, or during the initial settling-in period, to help the child feel safe and confident. This is always guided by the child's individual needs and discussed with you in advance. In most cases, the counselling session itself will then continue with the child individually.
As trust develops, it's important that children and young people have a safe, confidential space where they can talk openly. I'll keep you informed about practical matters and, where appropriate, discuss general themes or progress, while respecting your child's confidentiality.
If there are concerns about your child's safety or the safety of someone else, or if your child would like you to be involved in part of a session, we'll discuss this together and agree the most supportive way forward.
Do you offer online counselling?
Typically no. However this can be explored on a case by case basis.
What if counselling isn't right for me?
If I feel another service would better meet your needs, I'll discuss this openly and, wherever possible, signpost you to appropriate support.
What if I'm nervous about starting counselling?
It's completely normal to feel unsure about beginning counselling. My aim is to provide a warm, supportive and non-judgemental space where you, or your child, can feel comfortable moving at your own pace.
What if I'm in crisis?
If you or your child require urgent mental health support, please contact your GP, NHS 111, call 999 in an emergency or attend your nearest Accident & Emergency Department. My practice isn't a crisis service and I may not be able to respond immediately.
